Berth Warning System (BWS)
Over 30 years of mooring analysis and design by Dr Terry O’Brien has led to the development of OMC International’s (OMC’s) real-time and predictive Berth Warning System (BWS). By assessing the loads placed on moorings, lines and fenders by the vessel, the BWS provides assistance to terminal operators in making decisions as to the operating safety of berthed vessels.

The BWS combines the state of the art Simulation Package for the Motions of Ships (SPMS) with wind and wave forecasts out to 48 hours. This provides a scientific tool for reducing the probability of an incident resulting from excessive motions of the moored vessel as well as a planning tool for vessel berthings. Using the BWS allows terminal operators to determine whether to remove a berthed vessel, delay berthing, increase loading rates orsimply operate as scheduled.

In addition to improving berth operating safety, BWS increases port efficiency by reducing the risk that operations will be suspended unnecessarily. Where multiple vessels are waiting for the same berth, the BWS Planner functionality allows operators to model several vessels over a 48hr period to ensure operating safety and continuity by selecting the optimum order in which to load the vessels. Vessels of different sizes and stability parameters can experience significantly different motions in the same wave and wind conditions. BWS is distributed to port users through the internet via a web browser.
