The benefit of DUKC® systems fall into three categories:
Safety DUKC® systems ensure UKC safety margins are maintained under all conditions. The DUKC® has assisted over 40,000 vessel movements over 15 years without a single incident. Economic DUKC® systems have provided economic benefits to ports and port users that have amounted to nearly AU$10bn since 1993, when OMC first installed its world-leading DUKC system in Queensland's Hay Point.
Some of these economic benefits include:
• greater vessel throughput; • more efficient berth utilisation; • reduced demurrage; and • increased average drafts.
These benefits are obtained at a fraction of the dredging cost required to yield equivalent increases in productivity. Table 1 below summarises the economic benefits for three of the earliest implementations of DUKC. | Ports | Annual Benefit | Aggregate Benefit | | Hay Point, QLD | AU$60m | AU$720m over 12 years | | Port Hedland, WA | AU$150m | AU$1,350m over 9 years | | Dampier, WA | AU$60m | AU$360m over 9 years |
Environmental The economic benefits of DUKC® systems can offset the requirement for capital and maintenance dredging, thus reducing the environmental impact of the port.
